Welcome to For the Glory, soldier! We are an intermediate roleplay about the anime/manga Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin). Our story begins soon after the battle for Trost, leaving our characters, worn, battered and distraught. The popular district is currently overrun with titans, leaving it useless for any sort of cause that could aid in humanity’s fight. Those in the military are currently trying to devise a plan to take back Trost, and an operation will be put into place - that is, as soon as they acquire enough warm bodies to do so. Until then, they are in the midst of a hiatus, training as many cadets as possible to help them in carrying out their plan. The fight against the tyrannous beasts that rule over this world is as ruthless and relentless as ever, and it is up to you, soldier, to decide where our story will turn. Will humanity be able to retake Trost, or will it forever be in the merciless grasp of the titans? The answer is up to you.

The lie was so obvious that it almost hurt. It was so weird.. Hearing him spout off things that weren't truthful. It was the first time that the woman was sure that he wasn't being honest with her or anyone else. His voice was forever as smooth as velvet, but there was undertone that she was just barely able to pick up on, and needless to say it grabbed her attention rather harshly. It was as if he was wavering - not necessarily starting to break, but he was being corroded away, piece by piece. Petra didn't want to hurt him, in fact that was the exact opposite effect she was going for. She wanted to see him act more like a human than an android created to eradicate the titans. Levi was flesh and blood, just like her, just like the rest of their team and just like all of mankind. They were fighting for something almost unattainable, but they were striving for it anyway - that, more than anything, defined them as human beings.
Levi then moved closer to her, directly in front of her, leaning in a bit and making direct eye contact that she simply couldn't break out of. As much as she wanted to, the young woman couldn't bring herself to look away, her stomach turning into tight, uncomfortable knots that couldn't be consoled. Her breath was shaky when she took it in, the grays of her Captain's eyes piercing her through and through, leaving nothing behind. As much as that fazed her, she couldn't bring herself to actually be afraid of the Ackerman before her. He was might and somehow managed to rise above anything that came his way, proving that he was better than that. He didn't seem to be bothered by anything, but Petra knew that such a feat was impossible. Seeing people die changes a person for the rest of their lives and it also leaves permanent scars for the rest of that individual's life. This world was not an easy place to live, that much was obvious, but she knew that she could try her best to make the best out of an awful situation. They were clueless, they were weak, and they were losing the battle against the titans, but Petra knew that she would press on for as long as she could, fighting for her freedom, fighting for Levi's freedom.
Petra gulped visibly, her lips parting to speak. "N-..No sir." She shook her head slowly, her voice quiet. The fear that would have been invoked if this were anyone else remained to stay dormant. If anything she wanted to reach out and touch the pale skin of his cheek and try to console what was suffering just under the surface of her Captain. His eyes were cold, numbed to the things around him, but one can only stay "numb" for so long before it all falls apart. "Oluo is never agreeable." She smiled weakly, trying to yet again make a cute little joke, even at a time like this.
"I don't mind if you're agreeable or not. I.. Enjoy your company." It was an honest statement. Petra always liked it when Levi would come and sit with them to have a drink or anything of the like; he would stare in calm amusement at all of them, sometimes even crack the tiniest of smiles that faded away just as quick as they appeared. The Scout took in a deep breath, her voice almost breaking as she asked her next question. This certainly was pushing it - should she even be treading on this ground? Was this forbidden territory with Levi, or would this be the key to him opening up, even in the slightest?
"Captain," She never once broke the eye contact that was still being exchanged. "Why are you so hard on yourself?"

Levi returned to his upright position, seeing that Petra was at least a little flustered. It wasn't quite for the reason he had been going for, but it wasn't worth his time to continue trying to scare her into seeing things for the way they truly were. Nothing was truly good in this world, not entirely. Plus, he couldn't stay entirely bothered with her. She did make a good point; Oluo was more of a pain in the ass than she was, that was for sure. He allowed for a small twitch of his lips, the smallest curl at the corners at the brief amusement she provided. Given that they were staring directly at each other, she would see it. It seemed to have been a goal of her to get that flicker of a smile.
It was gone just as quickly as it came, one more bare smirk that was lost among all the frowns. She could have this small victory seeing as she was right back at poking the hornets' nest. There seemed to be such a large divide between them despite being so close to each other. For the briefest moment he wondered what kind of upbringing she had. He hadn't bothered to inquire about everyone's background as it didn't matter. If they had passed through the cadets and managed to stay on this side of the veil while being in the Scout Regiment, they were passable soldiers. What did he care if someone had been pampered throughout their childhood to end up wearing blinders that left so much looking so bright?
I'm not hard on myself; I'm hard on everyone else. He glanced away, looking over the ever darkening Trost. The sun was barely a red glow just above the horizon, leaving the sky in the east to twinkle with stars. They would be mostly safe for the time being as the titans grew sluggish without the sun. It was so odd that they became inactive at night. One would think that their hunger would drive them more than light. He brushed it off and nodded to the other soldier to follow him. Their self appointed watch was over as there wouldn't be much need to watch over resting beasts.
He glanced over his shoulder, the slightest hint of curiosity glinting in his steely eyes. You're fighting so hard that I'm this amazing person. Who are you really trying to convince? You or me? The captain asked, hoping she would honestly take a good hard look at her convictions where he was concerned. Why did she need him to be everything she said he was? What had he done to inspire her so? From there, did she realize that his ruthlessness, his efficiency, meant he had done some truly awful things to get to this point and she didn't want to believe that of him? He had to wonder if she had thought her admiration all the way through.
His footsteps were nearly silent in the quiet of the late evening. Dinner for most would be nearly over, leaving them to be among the few stragglers in the mess hall. A properly made cup of tea would most certainly ease some of the tension coursing through his veins. Of course, he knew the first cup this evening would be subpar. He would have to wait until he was in his own quarters, making it himself.
I'm not hard on myself; I'm hard on everyone else.
Levi truly did know how to say things that stung oh-so-harshly. It was a rough thing to hear, that was for certain, but she refused to let that falter her composure - not yet. Levi was full of so many things that he wasn't intending on sharing, but the Scout wanted to know what lay within his skull. She wanted to know what he had been through and the things he felt on a daily basis - this was important to her, and when something was important to Petra, she never let it go. Her dreams would always become reality, she would make sure of it.
Petra followed her Captain as he was talking away, the motion causing her to react immediately without thinking anything of it. As she was walking, however, something was spoken to her that shocked her a little more than she would have preferred. The Captain was trying to get under her skin, to make her think that her thought processes were incorrect. No.. No, she was sure of it - he was the one she would respect with undying devotion until the day she were to perish and move on from this ruthless, cold world. The stars were captivating as they loomed overhead, accompanying the moon in its endless drift in the night sky. The light from the sun was dwindling, threatening to be overtaken by the darkness. For a moment, she almost wanted to root for that last sliver of sunlight as though it were some sort of underdog, but.. That was childish. Didn't stop her from feeling a little disappointed when the night won, though.
"I.. I don't really think I'm trying to convince anyone anything." She sighed out the words gently, making sure to trail very close behind her leader. Honestly, she was telling the god's-honest truth. All she was doing was saying what she felt and maybe try to get an answer or two to the mysterious aura that surrounded the high-ranked Scout. He was.. Hurting. That much was obvious to her, as she could literally feel it every time she drew close to him. She could feel it now.
Petra's gaze drifted upward as they walked, a gentle smile washing over her features - the stars always reminded her of something her dad told her when she was just a little girl. Her upbringing was humble, as they didn't have much money, but her parents always gave her so much love. They were supportive of her no matter what path she chose to take, and were even proud of her when she told them she wanted to join the Scout Regiment. It was a hard pill for them to swallow, sure, as it would be for any parent, but in the end, they were supported her just as they always did. Such a thing was something that a lot of people didn't have, and she was so grateful for them, as she was for a lot of things.
"When I was little, my father once told me that the stars were the souls of brave people who had passed on. He said they go up there because they still want to be close to the ones they love, and from up there, they're able to watch over them until it's time for the ones still alive to join them. Then they people they love are watched over and welcomed into the family when they pass on. That's why there's so many." Saying it out loud sounded ridiculous, of courses, but it was still rather important to her. She was expecting Levi to brush it off as nothing, and she was prepared for that, but it did feel nice to share that little tidbit of her childhood with someone. "Sometimes I like to think that if that is true, all of the soldiers that have died are up there ,waiting for their friends and family, keeping them safe."
They returned to their horses in silence, which was fine. The silence that she experienced when she was with Levi was rather comfortable, Petra came to find. The rest of the squad members had been waiting on them the entirety of the time, and after their initial complaining, they all began back for headquarters. She suspected that her Captain would be itching for a cup of tea, and she would be lying if she said that didn't sound nice.
